INSPIRE Scholarships are awarded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India to promote science and technology by motivationg more students to choose science and technology careers. The scholarships are open to the entire spectrum of students from the 6th standard to post doctoral. The basic objective of INSPIRE is to communicate to the youth of the country the excitement and suitability of science education and careers. It also aims to attract talent to the study of science at an early age and thus build a human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the Science & Technology base. A striking feature of the programme is that it does not conduct competitive exams for identification of talent for award of scholarships. It relies on the efficacy of the existing educational structure for identification of talent. This article provides a general overview of the various awards by the DST. At school level the scholarships are awarded under two groups. From standard 6 to standard 8; and standard 9 and 10. In the 6th to 10th category each student will get an amount of Rs 5000 for making a Project and transportation cost for displaying the exhibits/ project in the exhibition. There is no examination for the selection process. Names of the tudents will be nominated by the Principal/Headmaster/Headmistress. Award money will be released directly to the Awardees by an arrangement with SBI.
The 6th to 10th category
The concerned State will provide the list of all Middle & Secondary level Schools. The scheme covers Government,Government aided and Private schools all over India. Names of one selected student each from Classes 6th, 7th and 8th in one Group and 9th and 10th in another Group of each School with an indication of preferred student name from each Group, will be provided by the Headmaster/Headmistress/ Principal of each School through the respective State Education department.
State Education Department will make a shortlist of students from each school in the State. Both academic records of the student and exhibition/project done by the student will be considered in the selection process. Criteria used by the State for the selection will be shared with the Department of Science and Technology. The cost of organizing the Exhibitions at the District & State Level will be borne by the Department of Science and Technology.
The Department has set the aim of distributing one million awards in five years spread across 5 lakhs Middle and Secondary level schools in the country.
Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)
Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) under Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) are awarded to students who are within the top 1% at Class XII examination conducted by various Examination Boards during the academic session ending March/April 2013.
Letters to eligible Candidates along with “Advisory Note to the Candidates for Eligibility in Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) Component under INSPIRE Scheme” have been sent through email to the schools from where they studied Class XII during the academic session ending March/April 2013. The candidates may collect the same from the school Principal.
Performance in top 1% in Class XII Board Examination and enrolment into education in Basic and Natural Science courses at B.Sc./Integrated M.Sc. or M.S.levels qualify eligibility automatically for Scholarship for Higher Education of the DST. The scholarship is valued at Rs. 80,000 per year for five years. This scheme offers 10,000 scholarships every year for undertaking Bachelor and Masters level education in the Natural & Basic sciences.
Students who are placed among the top 1% in 12th standard at their respective Board Examinations and are pursuing courses in Natural and Basic sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc.levels are eligible for this scholarship. In the current scheme only Natural and Basic sciences have been included as the focus is on Natural and Basic Sciences.
Top 10,000 rankers in the Joint Entrance Examination of JEE-Advance, JEE-Main (top 10,000 ranks) plus those clearing NEET (top 10,000 ranks), and who also opt to study Natural and Basic sciences in any academic institute or university leading to graduate and post-graduate degree, are also eligible for the scholarshipscholarship.
Students admitted to Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences (DAE-CBS) at the University of Mumbai or happen to be Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) scholars and Science Olympiad Medalists, opting to undertake courses in the Natural & Basic sciences leading to B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees are eligible for “SHE” scholarship. Applications without Endorsement Certificate signed by the Head of the Institution will be rejected.
INSPIRE fellowship aims at enhancing research fellowships for doctoral studies and opening up partnerships with private sector for enhancing the efforts of the Government in nurturing talents for scientific research.
Inspire Fellowship for pursuing Doctoral Programme in Science and Technology
This is one component of the Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC). This scheme is focused on attracting talented students to pursue doctoral degree in basic and applied sciences including engineering, medicine, agriculture, veterinary, pharmacy etc. after either masters’ degree in science or bachelor/ masters’ degree in engineering/ applied sciences.
This scheme offers outstanding opportunity for pursuing doctoral research in any recognized university in india through fellowships at the level. The selected candidates rank same as those of national eligibility test (NET) qualified candidates.
1. INSPIRE Scholar having secured minimum 65% marks in aggregate at M.Sc. or Integrated M.S./ M.Sc.
2. 1st Rank Holder in each Post-Graduate (PG) level examinations in Basic/ Applied Sciences including Engineering Sciences, Medical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Agricultural sciences and Veterinary Sciences at the University and academic Institutions.
3. 1st Rank Holders at the Graduate Level Examination in Engineering Sciences and other Professional courses conducted by a University or Institution in India.
4. The applicants shall also be eligible for admission to pursue research, leading to Ph.D. in any Indian University/ National Institute/ National Laboratories in India.
5. 1st Rank Holders of Colleges including Autonomous Colleges is not eligible to apply for the scheme.
6. Applicants should be Indian Citizens and have acquired the required qualifications necessary for admission to the PhD program only during the last year or current year are eligible.
Number and value
1000 INSPIRE Fellowships are awarded each year to eligible students. Inspire Fellowship is tenable for a maximum period of five years, subject to the completion of their PhD degree, whichever is earlier. Continuation of the Fellowship for once selected candidates is based on satisfactory performance certified by the institution as per as per rules governing the Fellowship. Value of the Fellowship is equivalent to NET/ GATE fellowship (Junior Research Fellowship / Senior Research Fellowship) and research grant to the candidate.
Selection for INSPIRE Fellowship is purely on the basis of academic merit, choice of the Supervisor, Host Institutions and the Research Proposal.

The Faculty Scheme has been designed to provide attractive opportunities to young achievers for career development and lead them into fulfilling long term careers in science and technology. The scheme is also expected to create high quality science teaching faculty and manpower for scientific and educational institutions, specially the Central and State universities.
